Meltdowns to Calm: Our Evening Routine for Neurodiverse Kids

If your evenings feel chaotic and bedtime is a battle, especially with neurodiverse children, you’re not alone. Bedtime used to be meltdown central in our house, and I dreaded that part of the day. But over time, we’ve slowly built a calmer, more predictable routine that works for our whole family – and I’m sharing exactly how we did it.

Get My Calm Start Guide

Why Evening Routine Matters

Bedtime isn’t just about getting children to sleep. It’s about helping them wind down from the day, process their experiences, and feel safe enough to relax. For children with autism or sensory sensitivities, even the smallest changes can feel overwhelming. So the more predictable and soothing our evenings are, the better everyone sleeps – including us adults!

Start with Observation, Not Overhaul

Before making any changes, I started by observing and tracking what was already happening. What time were my children eating? When did we start heading upstairs? What order were we doing things in? This gave me a clear picture of our current routine (even if it wasn’t ideal!) and helped me figure out what small changes we could make.

Inside Rhi’s Routine Resources, I have printable trackers to help you do this too. Recording what’s actually happening is so helpful before trying to make improvements.

Work Backwards From Wake-Up Time

To figure out when your child needs to fall asleep, start with when they need to wake up. Work backwards to allow time for enough sleep, then work back further to build in wind-down time and your full bedtime routine. Don’t forget to include wiggle room – transitions can take time, especially for neurodiverse kids.

One Change at a Time

It can be tempting to overhaul everything at once – dinner time, bedtime, mornings. But for neurodiverse children, sudden changes can be really distressing. We tackled one thing at a time, starting with meal routines (which often have a big impact on sleep), and then moved to bedtime.

Our Calm Bedtime Routine (What Works for Us)

Here’s what our evenings look like now:

  • Transition time: We give a 30-minute countdown before starting the evening routine. A song plays to signal it’s time to start clearing up toys and heading upstairs.
  • Teeth first: We do teeth brushing before baths to avoid toothpaste-covered pyjamas!
  • Bath or shower: Kept as calming as possible. We avoid baths if they wind the kids up too much.
  • Pyjamas: Comfortable, appropriate for the season, and nothing scratchy or irritating.
  • Reading time: If they’re enjoying books, we read together or talk about what they’re reading. If reading is tricky or stressful, we skip it and just connect.
  • Audiobooks or meditations: We use Audible with the speed slowed right down to help them drift off. I’m even working on creating my own soothing audios for bedtime (let me know if you’d like those!).

Gradual Changes to Sleep Associations

If your child currently needs you to lie with them to fall asleep, change that gradually. For us, this looked like slowly moving from cuddling in bed to sitting beside the bed, to being just outside the door. It took time, but it worked without overwhelming them.

The Power of Routine Cues

I’ve found that small, consistent cues help so much:

  • The same bedtime song
  • The same cuddly toy
  • A lavender spray or magnesium foot spray
  • The same audiobook every night

These become signals to the brain that it’s time to wind down and sleep.

Routine Helps Everyone

Even if your child isn’t diagnosed, many of these tips will help. And if you’re an adult with ADHD (like me), having this structured flow at night removes so much decision fatigue and makes life feel more manageable.

You’ve got this.
