If you’re here because meltdowns feel loud, scary and never-ending — I see you. I’ve been that mum, stuck between wanting to help and not knowing what to do next. What finally shifted things for me was a simple mindset: think like a firefighter.

Why I stopped trying to reason in the middle of a meltdown
For years I tried to explain, negotiate and teach right in the heat of the moment. It rarely helped. Then I learned to picture myself as a first responder. Firefighters don’t start with a lecture on fire safety — they get people out of the building. That’s the job. Calm, clear, decisive. Once everyone is safe, then you talk.
The Chimp Paradox made it click
If you’ve read The Chimp Paradox (or The Hidden Chimp for kids) by Steve Peters, you’ll know he explains our three “brains”:
- Human brain — the sensible, logical part.
- Computer brain — habits and automatic programmes.
- Chimp brain — reactive, emotional, laser-focused on survival.
During a meltdown the chimp is in charge. You can’t reason with a chimp. It’s not rude or disobedient — it’s biology. The more I remembered that, the calmer and more effective I became.
Safe and social vs fight, flight, freeze, fawn
In Reclaiming You, Abby Rawlinson talks about shifting from a sympathetic “danger” state (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) back into a parasympathetic “safe and social” state. That language really helped me. My goal in a meltdown isn’t to fix everything or teach a lesson. It’s simply to help my child move from danger mode to safe and social.
The firefighter analogy in real life
Picture a smoky room. Your body is shouting “survive”. Logic switches off. If a firefighter asked for a discussion or offered ten choices, you’d crumble. What helps is someone calm who says, “I’m here. I’ve got you. This way.”
That’s our role. I don’t analyse tone, assign consequences or offer complicated options in that moment. I co-regulate — steady voice, fewer words, simple instructions, change the environment if needed — and guide them out.
Tools that help us climb back to calm
I use two visuals to keep myself on track:
- The Emotional Guidance Scale (my parent tool) — a rainbow ladder from despair up to joy. I’m not trying to jump to the top, just the next step up.
- The Zones of Regulation (kid-friendly) — Blue, Green, Yellow, Red. My aim is to help them return to Green: calm and ready.
What I actually do in the moment depends on the child and the day, but the mindset is always the same: rescue first, talk later. Once everyone’s calm, we can chat about what happened, practise skills, and make plans for next time.
A gentle reminder for tired parents
If reasoning hasn’t worked mid-meltdown, it isn’t because you’re failing — it’s because your child can’t access the part of their brain that understands reasoning right then. You’re doing better than you think. Keep it simple, keep it calm, and be the firefighter.

Create Your Own Mini Organised Life Binder (My Secret Weapon)
I have tried every planner and organisation system under the sun, and nothing ever really worked for me — until I created my own Organised Life Binder System. It has genuinely changed my life as a busy, ADHD mum of four.
With the binder, I can keep everything in one place — family schedules, meal plans, routines, to-dos, goals, and all those little life admin tasks that usually get lost in the chaos. It’s flexible, printable, and completely customisable, so it works whether you want to focus on daily planning, decluttering, kids’ routines, budgeting, or all of the above.
And here’s the best bit — I’ve recently started using the Mini Binder version, and I’m obsessed! It’s all the organisation power of the full binder, but in a portable A5 size that actually fits in my bag. I use it for my own planning, but also for my kids’ systems — school routines, homework checklists, weekend resets — you name it.
No matter which size you choose, the Organised Life Binder System gives you:
✔ Printable pages you can reprint and refresh whenever you need
✔ The freedom to customise sections for your family’s needs
✔ Flexibility — add, remove, or move pages as life changes
✔ A calm, clear system to get the chaos out of your head and onto paper
