10 Easy Early Years Numeracy Activities Activities

Counting

The most basic activity that you can do with your child is to count the number of items in each picture. It may help to place a counter of some description over each item within the picture. as you count it.

Cutting

Being able to use scissors is an important skill that churn learn within the early years of primary school. Scissor practice can lead to improved fine motor skills, which in turn leads to improved handwriting.

Encourage your child to cut along the dotted lines and to cut out each of the squares to make them into individual cards.

Colouring

Not only is colouring a good way to introduce art and encourage creativity, but it helps with fine motor skills as kids practice staying within the lines too.

Try combining colouring with counting and colour in each items as it is counted.

Number recognition

Once the numbers are cut out, very some number recognition activities. Hold up a number and ask your child to identify it. Alternatively, say a number and ask your child to find the corresponding card.

Tracing numbers

Tracing numbers improves pen control and handwriting, plus aids num her recognition.

Matching

Ask your child to match each number with the corresponding card with the correct number of items on it.

Sequencing

Jumble up all of the number cards and ask your child to arrange them in order. For a more advanced option, as your child to arrange them in descending order.

Addition

Try addition exercises where you add one set of items on one card to the set of items on another. Ask your child to find the card with the answer on it.

Subtraction

As with addition you can use the cards for subtraction activities. Using cards rather than a pen and paper can often help to bring the maths off the page and keep your child engaged.

Pairs games

Turn over all of the cards, then take it in turns to turn over 2 cards at a time. Whenever a player finds a pair, they keep the cards. The paler with the most cards wins. Using fun games like these will help to work numeracy into your child’s day in a low pressure, fun way.
