Why Digital Tools Are Game-Changing for Organisation
Technology can be a lifesaver when it comes to managing a busy life. Digital tools allow you to:
- Set Reminders: Never miss an important task or event.
- Sync Schedules: Keep your family on the same page.
- Simplify Planning: Access everything you need in one place.
For someone with ADHD, having these systems in place can help avoid overwhelm, procrastination, and decision fatigue. Here are the tools I use to stay organised.
My Favourite Digital Tools for Staying Organised
1. Alarms and Reminders
I rely heavily on alarms and reminders to keep me on track throughout the day. I use my phone’s alarm to:
- Signal transitions between tasks.
- Remind me about appointments or school pickups.
- Prompt me to take medication or supplements.
Set alarms with specific labels, so you know exactly what they’re for without second-guessing.
2. Weekly “Brain Dump” Notes
At the start of every week, I create a dedicated note on my phone where I list every idea, task, or to-do that pops into my head. This helps clear mental clutter and ensures nothing important slips through the cracks.
3. Digital Calendar Management
I use Apple Calendar (or Google Calendar as an alternative) to manage my schedule. It’s perfect for:
- Setting recurring events like school drop-offs or weekly meetings.
- Colour-coding different areas of life (e.g., family, work, self-care).
- Syncing calendars with family members to keep everyone on the same page.
The calendar integrates seamlessly with my phone, making it easy to add events or check my schedule at a glance.
4. Task Management Apps
Apps like Todoist and Notion are great for organising to-do lists and breaking down larger tasks into manageable steps. Features like categories, priority tags, and due dates help me focus on what’s most important each day.
5. Pomodoro Timer Method
This isn’t an app per se, but I use a timer on my phone to implement the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. It’s perfect for tackling tasks without feeling overwhelmed.
How I Combine Digital and Physical Tools
While digital tools are amazing, I find they work best when paired with physical systems like my planners and binders. I transfer key events and tasks from my digital calendar to my Organised Year Planner and use the Organised Life Binder to manage long-term projects and family schedules.
This hybrid approach gives me both the flexibility of digital tools and the tactile, visual benefits of physical planners.
Key Benefits of Using Digital Tools for ADHD Mums
- Reduces Mental Overload: Having everything scheduled or written down means less to remember.
- Improves Time Management: Alarms and timers help keep you on track.
- Creates Consistency: Recurring reminders build habits and routines.
- Simplifies Collaboration: Shared calendars ensure family members are in sync.
Try These Hacks Today
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start small. Pick one digital tool, like alarms or a calendar app, and incorporate it into your daily routine. Once it becomes a habit, add more tools to build a system that works for you.
