Laundry Room Ideas For Small Spaces

Are you looking for laundry room ideas for small spaces? Today I am sharing exactly how I set out my laundry room in a small space to manage laundry for my large family of 6. We do a lot of laundry, so if you are looking for hacks, laundry routines and laundry room ideas for small spaces, I’ve got you covered.

Hoover H-Wash 350 12kg Smart Washing Machine

One of the best upgrades I’ve made to our laundry setup is our new Hoover H-WASH 350 Washing Machine. It’s a 12kg powerhouse with a super efficient ECO-Power inverter motor, but what I really love is that I can control it from my phone using the hOn app. Total game-changer! I can start or stop a cycle remotely (hello, multitasking), and best of all—it pings me a notification when the load is finished. That little nudge is so helpful for us ADHD girlies who are prone to forgetting the laundry until it’s cold and crumpled. Genuinely one of my favourite mum-life hacks.

Washing Machine & Dryer Stacker

If you’re tight on space (like we are!), the CARE+PROTECT Universal Stacking Kit with Sliding Shelf is an absolute lifesaver. It lets you safely stack your tumble dryer on top of your washing machine, which instantly frees up floor space—ideal for smaller utility rooms or cupboard setups. What makes this kit even better is the pull-out shelf, which acts as a handy little platform for sorting laundry, folding clothes, or just popping your laundry basket on while you’re loading or unloading. It’s super sturdy, easy to install, and one of those little additions that makes everyday mum-life just that bit easier.

Fluff Bin

Something that you have to do every time that you empty the dryer is to empty the fluff filter. This makes your dryer run more efficiently and reduces fire risk too.

But where does all of the fluff go? In my previous house, I’d carry said fluff to the kitchen bin every time – but not any more! This fluff bin lives on top of my dryer and is an easy place to pop the fluff, saving time every time I do laundry.

Stackable Baskets

Whichever type of baskets you go for in your laundry room, make sure that they have this one feature – they are stackable. This usually means that you buy multiple matching baskets so that they stack neatly. I have two types, (both the same make), let me explain what I use them for.

Large Laundry Baskets

I use these large laundry baskets for large amounts of laundry. I use them for bedding, collecting dirty laundry in the laundry room and for sending large quantities of sorted laundry up to individual bedrooms to be put away. They all stack neatly when not in use, saving loads of space, which is especially important when you are designing laundry rooms in small spaces.

Medium Baskets

These medium baskets have multiple uses around the home. I use them for sorting things to go back to the room in which they live when I am tidying, sorting and separating laundry, storage and much more. I have so many of this exact basket and they all stack neatly away inside the large baskets when not in use.

Wall Mounted Fold Away Ironing Board

My wall mounted ironing board has been a game-changer for my small laundry room. Not only does it save loads of space, but it is so much easier to pull out and put away than a traditional free-standing ironing board. As an added bonus, it makes an excellent additional sorting shelf for laundry too.

Wall Mounted Iron Holder

This iron holder has been another God send, especially as I have small children who do not mix well with hot irons. Not only does this store my iron neatly between uses, it also provides a safe place for it to cool after use away from little fingers.

Drying Rail

When my laundry comes out of the washing machine it is sorted into 2 piles; tumble-dryable and non-tumble-dryable. All of the clothes that are not suitable for the dryer are hung in my drying area. This is simply 2 hanging rails fixed between my kallax unit and the wall about a radiator. As the clothing is hung on hangers and dries in shape, it means that it needs minimal ironing.

Hangers

Having an abundance of hangers in your home makes laundry easier. I’d recommend sticking to the same type of hanger wherever possible, as hangers of the same shape will be more space efficient.

Collect spare hangers from around the house and keep them in your laundry room on your drying rail. It’s a good idea to keep spare hangers between drying clothes to prevent them from being too close together, allowing air to circulate and for them to dry properly.

Family Sorting System

If you have the space in your laundry room, I would highly recommend implementing a family sorting system. This is where you sort clean dry clothes directly into the box or basket allocated to each family member.

We have this kallax shelving system from IKEA with a Drona box for each family member. Clean, dry clothes that come out of the dryer get sorted into the relevant person’s box. Once the box is getting full, the contents is tipped into one of my laundry baskets and taken to that person’s bedroom for them to put away.

Yes, my children put away their own clothes! The little ones need a little help, but all in all, it is a good skill to teach your kids.

Supplies Shelf

Make sure that you allocate a place in your laundry room for your laundry detergents, chemicals and other supplies. If you have small children, make sure that this is out of reach or in a cupboard with a child lock. I have mine in the top box of my kallax unit safely away from my children, but accessible enough for me to easily put on a load.
