Mealtimes Were Meltdown Central… Until I Did This

Mealtimes in a busy, neurodiverse household can feel like utter chaos — especially if your children are picky eaters, anxious around food, or just struggle with transitions. For us, it used to be meltdown city. But once I implemented some simple mealtime routines, things became a lot more manageable. Today I want to share how our family mealtime routine works, and how you can adapt it to suit your home too.

Why Mealtime Routine Matters (Especially for Neurodivergent Kids)

Routine creates predictability. For children with autism, this can help them feel more secure, less anxious, and more open to trying new things. For me, as someone with ADHD, routine reduces decision fatigue — I don’t have to reinvent the wheel every day. We know what time we eat, where we eat, and how mealtimes work. It’s one less thing for my busy brain to juggle.

But even if you don’t think you have a routine, you probably do — it’s just one you’ve fallen into by default. So instead of overhauling everything overnight (which will likely backfire), we want to gently tweak that existing routine into something that supports your family better.

Where to Begin: Start With Set Mealtimes

It might sound basic, but this is the foundation that makes everything else easier. If you can eat at roughly the same times each day — especially dinner — your children’s bodies will begin to expect food at those times. That predictability makes it easier for them to sit, eat, and regulate around mealtimes.

For us, dinner is around 5pm. We eat at the table with no devices and minimal distractions. We’ve done this for years, and honestly, it works. The kids know what to expect, and it helps us all stay connected.

Creating a Calm Mealtime Environment

Here’s what our evening mealtime routine looks like:

  • We meal plan every weekend. This gets written up on a board in the kitchen, so the children always know what to expect. They love seeing their favourite meals coming up — it gives them a sense of control and excitement.
  • Everyone helps lay the table. It’s a simple task that signals “we’re transitioning to dinner time,” and the children are more invested when they’ve helped prepare the space.
  • We always eat at the table, not in front of the TV. I know this can be a tricky transition if your children are used to screens during meals, but I promise it’s worth it. Eating at the table helps children listen to their hunger cues, model social behaviour, and talk about their day.
  • We do gratitude and ‘peaks and pits’. This is a lovely little practice we do at meals — each person shares something they’re grateful for and the best and worst parts of their day. It encourages emotional connection and creates a nice rhythm.
  • We clear up together. Even young children can help carry cutlery or wipe the table. It sets the expectation that mealtimes are a shared family experience, not just something Mum is responsible for.

Encouraging Picky Eaters (Without the Power Struggles)

Believe me, I’ve been there. My son Will went through a stage where he only ate one meal: my homemade chicken and veg pasta with multicoloured pasta and melted cheese. I had to bring it to restaurants, holidays — you name it. It was intense.

What helped us?

  • Never force or pressure. I don’t push my kids to try new foods. Instead, I model eating them myself and make them available in the centre of the table.
  • Introduce new foods slowly. Sometimes the first step is just putting the new food on a side plate near them. Then it moves to the edge of their plate. Maybe it touches their regular food. Eventually, they might try a tiny bite. And that’s a win!
  • Use the ‘comfort + exposure’ approach. Serve one safe food alongside a new or unfamiliar food. Over time, the exposure helps reduce anxiety.
  • Get them involved. Let your children help choose meals, write the meal plan, or even prepare part of the dinner. They’re far more likely to eat something they had a hand in making.

Teaching Intuitive Eating

I’m passionate about helping my children develop a healthy relationship with food. We talk about:

  • Listening to your body. Are you actually hungry? Are you feeling full?
  • Food for fuel vs food for fun. We use these terms instead of “good” and “bad” foods. Food for fuel gives us energy and helps our bodies grow. Food for fun is dessert or treats — which we can enjoy in moderation after eating enough fuel.

And one more tip: we don’t talk about food at the table — especially if it’s negative. Comments like “ew, that’s gross” can put off everyone else. If there’s feedback to give, we talk about it before or after the meal, not during.
