Are you ready to set sail on a Disney Cruise? Embarkation Day is one of the most exciting moments of your holiday — it’s when the magic truly begins. But it can also feel a bit chaotic if you don’t know what to expect.
I’ve done this a few times now, and I’m sharing everything I’ve learned to help make your Disney Cruise Embarkation Day smooth, stress-free, and full of joy — especially if you’re sailing from Southampton like we are this summer.

Magical Cruise Planner

Get There the Day Before
We always travel to Southampton the day before our cruise. We live in Wales, so it’s quite the journey. But even if you’re not coming from far, I can’t recommend enough arriving near the port the night before. It gives you a buffer for any travel delays, and you’ll start your cruise feeling much more relaxed.
We usually stay in a nearby hotel and make Travel Day part of the adventure!
Do Your Last-Minute Checks
Before you leave the house, do a double — no, triple — check that you’ve packed:
- Your passports
- Any required travel documents (like ESTAs if you’re sailing from the US)
- Your Port Arrival Form from online check-in
Without these, you won’t be allowed to board the ship. Everything else (yes, even your clothes) could technically be replaced, but these documents are non-negotiable.

Book Your Parking in Advance
If you’re parking at the port, like with AB Parking in Southampton, make sure you’ve booked and printed your confirmation. Leave this on your dashboard — they’ll collect your luggage straight from your car before you walk to the terminal.
We’ve tried both taxiing from the hotel and driving ourselves, and I actually prefer driving and using AB Parking — it’s easier at the end of the cruise when everyone’s tired!
Stick to Your Port Arrival Time
This is really important: you won’t be allowed into the terminal before your designated port arrival time. Even if you arrive early, they’ll make you wait.
Last year, they had clearly marked queues for each time slot — super organised. Fingers crossed they do the same this year!
What Happens Inside the Terminal
Once you’re inside:
- Your port arrival form and passports will be checked.
- If your children are using the kids’ clubs, they’ll be issued Oceaneer Bands.
- If you have your own DisneyBand+, now’s when it’ll be scanned and linked to your account.
- You’ll go through baggage scanners — similar to an airport.
Important: If you’re bringing alcohol (up to two bottles of wine/champagne or six beers per adult), it must be in your hand luggage, not your checked bags.
Waiting in the Departure Lounge
After the security checks, you’ll head into a waiting area. You might be able to connect to the Disney Cruise Line Wi-Fifrom here, which will activate the full features of your Navigator app — including your itinerary, dining schedule, and activities.
If you’ve purchased a photo package, you can often get your first family photo taken here, which is a lovely memory to start the cruise with.
Boarding the Ship
Once your boarding group is called, it’s time for the magic to begin. You’ll walk a fairly long gangway (which only builds the excitement), and then your family will be announced as you enter the atrium. It’s honestly one of my favourite parts of every Disney Cruise!
Your Key to the World Cards (room key/ID/payment card) will be waiting outside your stateroom in a little holder, often shaped like a fish — hence the term “fish extender.”
What To Do Before Your Room Is Ready
Most staterooms aren’t ready until early afternoon, so you’ll have a bit of time to explore:
- Grab lunch at Cabanas, the pool deck, or my personal favourite — the Welcome Aboard Lunch in Animator’s Palate.
- Pop into the open houses for the kids’ clubs — this is the only chance adults can have a look inside, and they’re amazing!
- Check the Navigator app for any early activities you don’t want to miss.
Don’t Forget the Muster Drill
Before you sail, you’ll need to attend the Muster Drill — a safety procedure that every guest must complete. Don’t be late, or you’ll hold up the whole ship!
If you’re travelling with children (especially with autism), it can help to bring:
- Ear defenders (the sirens are LOUD)

Sail Away Party & What Happens Next
After the Muster Drill, it’s time for the Sail Away Party — complete with music, dancing, and characters. It’s so emotional every time!
Once the ship is at sea, the shops open, and the evening begins:
- If you have early dining, you’ll eat first, then see your Broadway-style show.
- If you have late dining, it’s show first, then dinner.
Either way, it’s a magical evening to end an already incredible day.
