Mornings used to be chaos in our house. No matter how hard I tried, it always felt like we were running behind, rushing, and generally stressed to the max. And that was before I had four children. Even with just one, I remember the daily scramble all too well.
Fast forward to now, and while our mornings aren’t always perfect (because life), they’re so much calmer and smoother thanks to a routine that works with our neurodiverse family, not against it. Between my own ADHD and children with additional needs like autism and ADHD, I knew we needed systems in place that actually supported us.
If mornings feel like a battle in your home, I see you. I’ve been there. And in this post, I’m sharing what’s made the biggest difference for us—including one thing that I wish I’d started sooner.

Why Our Mornings Fell Apart (and What Changed)
For years, I wasn’t an organised person. In fact, I didn’t even realise I had ADHD until I was 40. I thought mornings were just meant to be messy and stressful—until I started piecing together small habits and routines that changed everything.
Every time I was pregnant with another baby, I knew I had to get more organised or I’d be in trouble. So I trialled systems, routines, hacks—you name it. And slowly, things started to work. But it wasn’t about becoming this super-organised, perfect mum. It was about reducing stress for everyone in the house, especially my neurodivergent children who thrive on structure.
It Actually Starts the Night Before
I know we’re talking about morning routines, but here’s the truth: calm mornings are built the night before.
- Uniforms ready (including socks, pants, hair accessories—the lot)
- PE kits and school bags packed
- Ingredients or random items for school events remembered!
- Breakfast choices pre-decided (especially if your kids struggle with too many options)
We also do a weekend reset to prep for the week ahead, which gives us that gift of time and sanity on weekday mornings.
The Magic of Alarms (And Not the Scary Kind)
I use alarms throughout the morning to signal transitions. And no, I’m not talking about those jarring beeps that make your heart race—I use songs we all love. Some are from our favourite Disney fireworks shows, others are just upbeat tunes that shift the energy.
Alarms aren’t just for me either. They help my children know what’s happening next, which really supports their need for predictability (especially with autism). It also means I don’t have to constantly nag. The song says it’s time to move on, not me!
Visual Checklists for the Win
My youngest uses a simple morning routine checklist with visual prompts that she ticks off with a whiteboard pen. Things like:
- Go to the toilet
- Brush teeth (before getting dressed to avoid toothpaste on clean uniform!)
- Get dressed
- Make bed
- Brush hair
- Get shoes, coat and bag ready
This lives in a frame and she loves ticking things off. It helps her feel in control and gives me peace of mind knowing we’re not forgetting anything.
Wiggle Room is Everything
One of the biggest game changers? Planning in buffer time.
If you’ve got children who are neurodiverse, you already know things can change in a moment. A missing shoe. A meltdown. A sudden need for a different cereal bowl. Leaving wiggle room in the morning routine means we can handle the curveballs without everything falling apart.
Our Morning Timeline
Here’s a rough breakdown of how our mornings go:
- 5:00am I get up (don’t worry, this isn’t essential—it’s just what works for me!)
- 7:15am Alarm goes off to signal breakfast
- 7:25am Alarm to end breakfast and start tidy-up
- 7:55am Alarm for shoes and coats
We have a school bag station by the front door so nothing gets lost or forgotten. The kitchen is reset after breakfast so I can start my workday without having to clean first. And there’s space in the routine for cuddles, chats, or unexpected wobbles.
Morning Routines That Actually Help (Even With Autism + ADHD)
Routine helps my children feel secure and reduces anxiety. It helps me reduce decision fatigue and stay focused (hello, ADHD brain). It’s like setting up my future self to succeed before the day even begins.
