Feeling like family life is total chaos? I’ve been there — overwhelmed, exhausted, and trying to juggle all the things as a mum of four neurodivergent children (and with ADHD myself). If you’re in that messy middle where nothing feels predictable and meltdowns are part of your everyday, I want you to know you’re not alone — and there is a way to make it easier.
Let’s talk about how I started building routines from scratch, in a way that actually worked.

The Chaos Before The Calm
When I first became a mum, I was completely disorganised. I wasn’t raised with structure, and I definitely wasn’t one of those naturally tidy, organised people. Add in undiagnosed ADHD (at the time) and four children with additional needs, and life felt like one long game of survival.
I used to think routine was something for those picture-perfect mums on Pinterest — the ones who colour-code their spice racks and never forget school dress-up days. But what I’ve learned is that routine isn’t about perfection. It’s about taking the pressure off.
And if your child currently has no routine, needs you to lie with them to fall asleep, or struggles with transitions? That istheir routine right now — and it’s totally possible to shift it gently.
Why I Don’t Recommend Starting With Sleep
Sleep is often the first thing parents want to fix — especially if you’ve got a child who won’t settle at night or wakes frequently. Trust me, I get it. But here’s the thing: sleep is deeply connected to everything else, especially food.
That’s why I don’t recommend starting with bedtime. Instead, I always suggest starting with…
Mealtimes: The Unsung Hero of Routine
If you’re starting from scratch, building a solid mealtime routine is the best place to begin. It sets the tone for the day and supports everything else — including sleep and school mornings.
Start by choosing a regular time for dinner each night. I know it’s not always possible if you’ve got shift work or children with a million activities, but do what you can to be consistent.
For us, we aim for 5pm dinners. We only eat at the table — no screens, no wandering off. Everyone knows what time to expect dinner, what we’re eating (thanks to a weekly meal plan on the kitchen wall), and what the routine looks like: lay the table, eat together, then clear up as a family.
This small, simple structure gives your children the predictability they need to feel safe — especially if they’re dealing with sensory challenges around food.
Don’t Try To Change Everything At Once
One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to overhaul everything all at once. That’s a fast track to burnout (for you and your children).
Instead, pick one area — like mealtimes — and focus on embedding that new routine slowly. Once that feels more settled, you can move on to bedtime, then morning routines, and eventually a weekend reset routine to help prep for the week ahead.
Think small steps, not massive changes.
Tools & Tips That Helped
Here are a few practical things that helped us make routine stick:
- Timers and alarms – These are brilliant for transitions. We use countdowns and set alarms for different parts of the day. It removes the nagging and gives kids something external to respond to.
- Time timers – These visual timers are amazing for helping children (especially younger ones) understand how much time they have left.
- First/Then language – A simple switch in how we speak: “First dinner, then play.” It really helps children feel prepared for what’s next.
- Visual timetables – Whether it’s picture cards for little ones or a written checklist for older kids, seeing the day laid out can be a game changer.
- Routine as a challenge – We’ve made our routines into little games. Beat the timer. Tick everything off and earn some free time. It adds an element of fun and motivation.
Routines = Less Meltdowns, More Calm
Routine doesn’t fix everything. But it does make a massive difference. It reduces the unknown, creates structure, and helps everyone feel calmer — including you.
If you’re trying to implement new routines, expect some resistance. After all, their current routine (even if it’s chaos) is what they know. But with positive reinforcement, a bit of creativity, and consistency, your family can absolutely shift to something that works better.
