Best Accessories For Vlogging With The Canon G7X Mark iii Camera

I have recently upgraded from my Canon G7X Mark ii to the Canon G7X Mark iii which claims to be the best vlogging camera for filming YouTube videos. In the video below, watch me unbox the Canon G7X Mark iii vlogger kit then keep reading to learn about which accessories I have to go with the Mark iii, as well as which are worth it and why.

Tripods

I have a number of different tripods that I use for filming with my Canon G7X mark iii that I have collected over the years. I am not suggesting by any means that you need all of these tripods, instead, I will share which tripod I use in different filming scenarios in order to help you make a decision which might be best for your vlogging needs.

Canon Tripod Grip HG-100TBR

The Canon HG-100TBR is the newest tripod to join my vlogging kit since upgrading from the Canon G7X mark ii to the mark iii.

The Canon HG-100TBR is a hybrid mini tripod and handheld grip. The HG-100TBR includes the Canon BR-E1 Wireless Remote Control which slots directly into the tripod, meaning you can easily sort and stop recording from the tripod without having to reach around to the record button which is on the other side of the camera when you vlog in selfie mode.

The BR-E1 remote quickly unclips, making it easy for you to shoot stills or starts and stop filming remotely while the camera is on the tripod.

Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod

This has been my go-to mini tripod for some time now. When I bought my first G7X camera, I also bought the Joby JB01505-BWW GorillaPod to go with it. To be honest, I didn’t get along with the GorillaPod as I found it harder to get the camera level and the legs kept detaching.

So I invested in the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod and didn’t look back. This tripod makes it easy to level the camera for static shots, is sturdy and is comfortable to hold while vlogging on the go.

This tripod doesn’t benefit from the remote control like the Canon HG-100TBR, but it comes in at a lower price point too.

K&F Concept Tripod

The K&F Concept Tripod is my go-to tripod for static filming. It’s the tripod that I use when filming at home, especially for speed cleans and other videos where I need some great angles.

This tripod has a great range of heights, plus the ability to capture over head shots, which are ideal for things like food photos and videos.

This tripod also allows you to take smooth panning shots. Although it is far more bulky than my other tripods, it comes with a carry case bag, so can be folded away to take on location if necessary.

Microphone Input Accessories

One of the big differences between the Canon G7X Mark ii and Mark iii is that the Mark iii now has the ability to use an external microphone by taking advantage of the 3.5mm microphone input socket. Here are the accessories that I use to record external audio with my G7X Mark iii.

UURig Cold Shoe Mount

If you are using a standard tripod (other than the HG 100TBR, which has a cold shoe mount included) and would like to add accessories such as an external microphone to your Canon G7X Mark iii, you will need a cold shoe mount in order to successfully attach them. I use this cold shoe when filming with my PIXI or K&F Concept Tripod.

I have this UURig cold shoe mount which fits neatly onto the bottom of the G7X Mark iii.

This cold shoe mount actually improves the camera in that it allows you to now access the battery and SD card compartment with both the cold shoe and the tripod attached. G7X users will know that when attaching the tripod directly to the camera, you have to detach the camera in order to access the battery compartment.

Although the UURig cold shoe mount is not necessary when using the Canon HG-100TBR, I still use it as it allows me to still access the battery and SD card compartments.

RØDE VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone

The Rode VideoMicro attaches directly to the camera and provides a huge boost in sound quality when you are vlogging near to the camera.

RØDE VideoMicro On-Camera Microphone Case

I have this protective case for storing my Rose VideoMicro and protecting it when travelling.

RØDE Wireless GO – Compact Wireless Microphone System

If you want to record while standing slightly further back from the camera but don’t want to lose sound quality, the Rode Wireless Go is ideal.

One unit attaches to the camera and the other can be positioned where you want to capture the sound. I clip the second unit onto my jeans and plug a lavalier into it (which we will talk about next), but you can also capture sound directly from the Wireless Go as there is a built-in microphone in the transmitter unit. .

RØDE Lavalier GO Professional-Grade Wearable Microphone

This is the lavalier microphone that I plug into the transmitter unit of my Rode Wireless Go. They come in black or white, (so choose the colour which will blend best with your clothing) and have additional fluff wind muffs included.

Audio Splitter Cable

This is the cable that I use when I want to simultaneously record sound from my Rode VideoMicro (attached to the camera) and the Rdse Wireless Go (which also captures sound when the transmitter is further away).

Travel Case For RØDE Wireless Go

This case protects my Rode Wireless Go microphone and accessories and keeps all of the bits and pieces protected and organised.

Digital Storage

SD Cards

I have several SD cards in order to record footage from my Canon G7X Mark iii, meaning that while one SD card is in use in the camera, you can be editing using another.

SD Card Cases

I use these SD card protection cases to store, protect and transport my SD cards when they are not in my camera.

External Hard Drives

One thing that you will find if you are vlogging with the G7X Mark iii, is that you will end up with a lot of footage.

Rather than fill up the internal hard drive of my MacBook, where I edit my videos, I use an external hard drive to store raw footage and completed videos.

Canon G7X Mark iii Camera Protection

Camera Case

When I bought my original Canon G7X Mark iii I bought the “official” Canon camera case to go with it. To be honest, I rarely used it as I tend to put my camera in my bag with the mini tripod still attached on days where I vlog, and the canon case doesn’t allow this.

This inexpensive neoprene case allows me to place my new Canon G7X Mark iii into the case with the tripod still attached. The lid doesn’t;t close when I do this, but at least the camera is afforded some protection in my bag.

Screen Protector

I’m a big believer in tempered glass screen protectors for my screen, on my iPhones, iPads and cameras. This tempered glass screen protector for the G7X will give protect screen and make it less likely to scratch or shatter.

Lighting

Ring Light

When I film indoors in less than perfect lighting, I use my Neewer ring light.

Mini Ring Light

My mini ring light is good for on the go and also using with my iPhone when filming for Instagram.
