What Are Port Adventures?
Port Adventures are excursions you can book through Disney Cruise Line for days when the ship docks at a port (rather than sea days where you’re onboard the whole time). These are guided experiences—things like sightseeing tours, food tastings, beach days, and cultural trips—all arranged and hosted by Disney.
You can also book excursions independently or just get off the ship and explore the local area on your own. It’s entirely up to you.
When Do You Find Out Which Port Adventures Are Available?
You won’t be able to see all the specific excursions until your onboard booking window opens, and when that is depends on your Castaway Club status. The more times you’ve sailed with Disney, the earlier you can book. But even if you’re a first-time cruiser, don’t panic—there’s often still availability, and you might be able to grab a last-minute spot by popping down to Guest Services once onboard.

Disney’s Private Islands: Castaway Cay & Lookout Cay
If you’re lucky enough to be sailing to Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, there are loads of amazing experiences to choose from—snorkelling, bike hire, water sports, and the highly sought-after private cabanas. Those cabanas are very limited and usually snapped up fast by Pearl Castaway Club members or Concierge guests, so don’t hang about if they’re on your wish list.
Should You Book a Port Adventure Through Disney?
The Benefits:
- You won’t be left behind. Seriously, this is the big one. If you’re late back from a third-party or self-guided trip, the ship will leave without you. But if you’re on a Disney-organised excursion, they’ll wait for you.
- It’s seamless and well organised. Transport, tickets, timings—it’s all handled for you.
- They know the ports inside out. You’ll usually get a great guide and a smooth experience.
The Downsides:
- It can be pricey. You are definitely paying for the convenience.
- Early starts. Most groups meet early in the morning onboard—sometimes in the theatre or cinema—and you’ll get details in the Navigator app once onboard.
- Limited flexibility. You’ll need to stick to the group’s schedule.
Exploring Independently (Or With a Third Party)
You absolutely can book excursions with local providers or simply get off and explore on foot. This can be a brilliant way to save money and experience the port at your own pace—but it comes with a risk. If you’re late getting back, Disney won’t wait for you.
When I booked our Spanish cruise, I looked up where the ship was docking in each port. In one, we were right in the middle of the action and could see the ship the whole time, which felt super safe and stress-free. But in another, we were docked in a much more industrial area—and that’s when a port adventure (or at least a shuttle bus) can be really helpful.
Complimentary Shuttles From the Ship
If the ship is docked somewhere that isn’t walkable or pedestrian-friendly, Disney usually provides a free shuttle bus into town. This is a great middle-ground option—you don’t need to book a full excursion, but you’ll still be dropped near the action.
Keep an eye on two things:
- All Aboard Time – the absolute latest you can get back on the ship
- Last Shuttle Time – make sure you don’t miss the final return bus!
Both will be shared with you on board and are worth noting down.
Staying On the Ship During Port Days
This might surprise some people, but you don’t have to get off the ship at all.
If you’ve been to the port before, you’ve got very young children, or you simply fancy a more chilled day, staying on board can be lovely. The ship is quieter, and there are still loads of included activities happening throughout the day.
The shops won’t be open due to port regulations, but the pools, restaurants, kids’ clubs, and entertainment are all available. Sometimes, a quiet day on deck with a drink and a book is exactly what you need!
Don’t Forget Your Key to the World Card (or MagicBand+)
To get on and off the ship, you’ll need your Key to the World Card or your MagicBand+. This is how Disney checks who’s getting off and ensures only verified guests are returning.
Depending on your itinerary and nationality, you might also need your passport, so keep an eye on the info given to you the night before. This will be in your Navigator app, and also announced on the Stateroom TV in the daily morning broadcast by your Cruise Director.
Final Thoughts
Whether you decide to book a Disney Port Adventure, explore independently, or stay on the ship, there’s no right way to spend a port day—it all comes down to what’s right for your family.
We’ve done all of the above on different cruises. On our most recent sailing, we only got off the ship at one of the two ports—and honestly, the kids just wanted to get back onboard to enjoy the ship!
