How To Do A Spring Reset

Who is in need of a Spring reset? I know I am.

The children have just gone back to school after the Easter holidays & the good intentions that lots of us had at New Year seem to have melted away with the winter snow. While it’s been lovely having the children home for the recent break and the relaxed mornings have been bliss, there are some good habits that have slipped. It’s time to implement some new habits for the new season and reinstate some things that may have been pushed aside.

So over Easter I’ve eaten way too much chocolate, skipped too many workouts, fallen behind on work and simply not walked enough steps. Rather than beating myself up about this, I’m simply going to “reset” and do better from today. Dwelling on any “mistakes” will get us nowhere, starting today with the rest will move us back toward our goals.

Here’s my plan, take the bits from it that work for you and make it your own.

Reset Your Morning Routine

Not that my morning routine has been “broken” as much as it has been “on pause”. The truth is that my morning routine (that I have written about extensively and made lots of videos about) sets my day up for success. Your morning routine will look different depending upon your goals and what you have going on in your life, but here’s a summary of mine.

  • 5:30am – wake up, use bathroom, clean teeth, wash face and apply moisturiser.
  • 5:40am – downstairs to drink my Burst drink (prepared the night before)
  • 5:45am – Morning pages; this is 3 pages of stream of consciousnesses writing to brain dump everything in my mind from the night. Followed by writing out my goals as if they have already happened. Then it’s time to wire out a to do list for the day / add to the to do list written yesterday,
  • 6:10am – workout. I use this time for yoga, Pilates, barre workouts or occasionally dance workouts when I am in the mood. My main cardio will be walking later in the day.
  • 6:45am – get myself & the children washed, dressed & ready for school
  • 7:15am – breakfast for everyone
  • 8:00am – walk to school, time to start getting those steps in!
  • 8:30am – home to start work for the day.

It’s well worth noting that your morning routine does not have to start this early or be structured this way. This is what works for me in my current season of life. There have been times where my morning routines have had me up later than this. There have been times where my work schedule required me to get up at 4:30am in order to work before my kids got up.

Then of course there have been the times where my morning routine blurred into the night before having been up with a newborn baby. Check out more morning routine resources below to find a way to make your mornings work for you.

Mindful Eating

Once again I have slipped into the habit of constant grazing and emotional eating, leaving me feeling bloated and sluggish. I’m pretty sure that is not something that best version of me does.

It’s time to make a return to mindful eating. This isn’t so much a weight loss or dieting thing, but more of a long term healthy habit thing.

Mindful eating is simply about listening to your body and eating when you are actually hungry, not just because you are bored, stressed or tired.

Eating mindfully means being aware of the taste and texture of your food and most importantly stopping when your are full. So goodbye “mindlessly shovelling food into my face” and hello listening to my body.

Staying Active

I touched on this in my morning routine but I need to get back to simply moving my body more. This doesn’t always have to mean dressing into workout gear for official “exercise”. So while I plan to incorporate stretching & toning workouts into my mornings before the children get up, I don’t feel the need to add in loads of cardio when I quite simply walk more. It’s a 10 minute walk to the children’s school (or double that for the direction in which I drag the children), so simply doing the school run myself rather than asking my husband to do it means a minimum of 40 minutes walking per day. This is brilliant exercise!

If you can’t walk your school run, where can you squeeze in some more steps? Could you park further away from your destination and walk the last few minutes? Walk about the block before dinner? Walk to the local shops when you need milk? Take the stairs not the lift?

Spring Wardrobe Switch

With a new season we need new clothes! And by “new clothes” I don’t mean that we all need to run out to the shops and spend a small fortune. No, what I mean is it’s time to get spring / summer clothes out of storage and put away those warm wooly jumpers. As I get my new season clothes out of storage, I always feel like I have new clothes, simply because I haven’t seen them in months (event though I have owned them for years).

Declutter For The Win

Spring cleaning is all very well, but if you have too much stuff, your home will never feel clear enough to feel truly clean. Plus, the more stuff you have the more there IS to clean, right?

We are now at the 2 year anniversary of being in our “new” home. I did a MASSIVE amount of clearing, decluttering and organising every inch of our new place the we moved in. Every drawer, every cupboard, every corner was tackled.

Fast forward 2 years and life has happened. “Stuff” has accumulated, and while many systems remain in place, clutter spots have developed. Many of them are sneaky spots, hidden and disguised inside furniture. Never the less, they are there and need dealing with. So this spring I am taking on the clutter, one drawer at a time!

Because the truth is, decluttering is not a one and done event. Nope, it’s a process that runs in cycles. When we accept this, we can stay on top of it. And when better to start the next cycle of decluttering and organising than spring?

Maximise Productivity

I have pretty good systems in place to prioritise productivity in my life (see other blog posts and videos for details), but now is the time to see which systems have slipped and need to be re-implemented.

The main productivity system that I have used previously and will be bringing back is pomodoro technique of focussed working and structured breaks. Then plan is to utilise these breaks of 5 minutes to work on another habit that I need to re-implement, more stretching. Remember; moving your body = good for your mind too, meaning you will be more productive at work.

Laundry Every Day

OK, those of you that follow me over on Instagram will know that this is not something I need to start doing or even reimplement, it’s something I live by. I put at least one load of laundry on every day (often more) and make sure that it’s not left in the machine so long before drying that you have to put it back on for another wash. Trust me, a load a day will remove the overwhelm and change your life. Future you will thank you.
