Channel Marie Kondo
Have you read Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life Changing Art Of Tidying Up“? In the book, Marie talks about decluttering to make your house a home.

She talks about throwing our anything that doesn’t “spark joy” and I’m inclined to agree. Declutter anything that you don’t love from your home. Get rid of any clothes that aren’t beautiful, any toys that aren’t immaculate and any clutter that stresses you out. The less clutter you have, the easier it is to keep your home tidy.
Storage Is Your Best Friend
I’f you’ve watched my house tour video (which you can catch below if you haven’t seen it) you will know that storage is very important to me. Why? Because clever storage means less stuff “out” which equals less clutter and a tidier house.
A lot of the storage solutions on our house are some form of the kallax shelving units from IKEA. Kallax is a very versatile system and it holds so much stuff.
Identify Your Danger Areas
Where does stuff get dumped in your house? Identify your own “danger areas” and find a solution.
One of our problem areas has always been the entrance hall where things get dumped by the front door. I tackled this with a backpack station (made from
Even with storage solutions, it is likely that your “danger areas” will need regular decluttering. Check out the video below from when I recently decluttered our entrance hall.
Devise A Laundry System
Another previous problem in our house was clean washing that had yet to be put away. Baskets and baskets would accumulate in my bedroom driving me insane until I had time to put it away.
Check out the video below to see the laundry system solution that I devised to tackle this issue.
Clear All Surfaces
Make it a rule that surfaces stay clear. Not only will this make your home look clear, but family members will be less likely to dump clutter on a clean & clear surface than an already partially cluttered one.
Get Everyone Involved
Remember that this is not the 1950’s and keeping the house in order is not all on you! Enlist the help of all family members to keep your home looking nice. Even your children can help out with age appropriate tasks such as helping to clear toys, put their dirty laundry in the basket, clear the table etc.
Don’t Sit Down In The Evenings Until The Kitchen Is Done
There is nothing worse than waking up to a kitchen that stinks of last night’s dinner, so really the kitchen needs to be done each night before bed. As you are preparing dinner, clean up as much as possible as you go, then don’t sit down (or let anyone else sit down for that matter) to relax for the evening until it is done. If you’re anything like me, once you’re sitting down, that’s it, your motivation will be gone.
Keep Supplies In Stock
If you don’t have the things that you need to clean, you can’t get it done. Make sure that when you have the time and the energy, you have plenty of supplies in stock. Check out the posts below to see what I use to keep our home in order.
Keep Supplies To Hand
Got 5 minutes spare? You’ll be far more likely to fit in a speed clean if everything that you need to clean is not only in stock but close to hand. Consider keeping a loaded cleaning caddy upstairs as well as downstairs for when motivation strikes, just make sure cleaning supplies are stored out of reach of children.
Cordless Vacuum
One of my more expensive yet life saving purchases has been my Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner. It is amazing for quick clean ups and helps to stay on top of things in 5 – 10 kinut bursts when I can fit them in around the children.
Take Advantage Of Pockets Of Time
While kettle is boiling, wipe around the kitchen surfaces. While kids are in the bath, wipe around the sink with a clean cloth. While the children are finishing their dinner, fold laundry. By taking advantage of these little pockets of time, you will soon be able to tackle your home, 5 minute chunks at a time.
